Holiness is the New Flossing

DeYoung calls holiness the new camping; what everyone likes the idea of but no one really wants to do. I call holiness the new flossing. What everybody knows they need to do, but don't really want to do, and only does when they have to.

What can those of us who feel so unholy do to counteract our tendency towards coddling, condoning and even celebrating sin; and our just as prevalent leanings towards discouragement and doubt? Practice the three S's:
Security, Sincerity, Surrender.

1. Security. Be Secure. Reality is your friend. Believe the truth. What Jesus says about you matters. Your positional (aka definitive) sanctification is settled and sure in Christ.

2. Sincerity. Be Sincere. Don't let sin reign. Kill it by the Holy Spirit. Confess and forsake your old life and present failings. Your progressive sanctification depends on it.

3. Surrender. Be Surrendered to your new Master. He is working in you for His good pleasure. Worship Him reverently and rely on Him totally. Jesus is your life.

Don't misunderstand 1 Peter 1:15-16, "Like the Holy One who called you, be holy also in all your behavior. For it is written, 'You shall be holy for I am holy.'". That doesn't mean you have to try really hard to be good. It doesn't mean you have to try to impress everybody. It doesn't mean that there's this impossible standard that you cannot meet. It means that those who profess to know Jesus and follow him, will fully trust him as they live by the power of the spirit and cling to the truth of God's Word.
