No Loitering, This Pleasing Pain is Necessary

What trial or trouble are you facing today? You may not be able to see past it right now. Your way may seem clouded. You may be discouraged and downcast. He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion. It is God who is at work in you to will and to do his good pleasure.

God speaks peace to our souls in the midst of difficulty. Remember, God knows what he's doing. He's gonna work all this out. He knows the plans he has for us. This is a trial. This is a challenge beyond us. If we were not faced with challenges beyond us it would be easy for us to think that we could do things on our own. This is one more thing that makes it clear to us that we need Jesus so much.

He has chosen us, he has gifted us, and he has produced fruit in and through our lives and His Church. Let's wait upon him earnestly. Let's trust him to do a miracle beyond what we could ever ask or think. Let's come boldly before the throne of grace in everything in our lives.

When facing trials, it is easy to retreat or sink down in the depths. God wants us to bask in our position in Christ, seated with him in the heavenlies. Following Jesus in humility requires that we continue without detour. To follow without stipulation, resolved to keep going where he leads. May we pray, Not our will but yours be done Lord. May we live for Jesus and the Gospel.

The temptation to loiter in the depths of despair is strong. It is so easy to get sidetracked, diverted, waylaid from our goal. David Brainerd, missionary to Native Americans in the 1700s, said, "When I really enjoy God, I feel my desires of him the more insatiable and my thirstings after holiness the more unquenchable;...Oh, for holiness! Oh, for more of God in my soul! Oh, this pleasing pain! It makes my soul press after God...Oh, that I might not loiter on my heavenly journey!"
